Global Box Office Below Expectations? ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Cancels Release in Japan

The American horror film ‘M3GAN 2.0’, which is currently still showing in Taiwan, was originally scheduled to be released in Japan in October. However, this morning, an announcement was suddenly made on the official website and social media, stating that the release plan has been cancelled in Japan, leaving many Japanese fans both disappointed and shocked.

It is reported that ‘M3GAN 2.0’ performed poorly at the North American box office during its opening week, grossing only 10.2 million USD (about 43.6 million MYR), far lower than the 30.4 million USD (about 130 million MYR) achieved by the first installment, representing a two-thirds decline. This does not even include the cost projections from the lackluster overseas market revenues. Judging by the current trend, it appears that catching up to the first film’s global box office of 181 million USD (about 774 million MYR) is no longer possible.

The film company admitted to overestimating M3GAN’s appeal. The sequel, ‘M3GAN 2.0’, not only shifted the movie’s style abruptly to an action film, but also faced tough competition during its release window with summer blockbusters like the live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, ‘F1’, and ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’. Jason Blum, founder of the production company Blumhouse behind the ‘M3GAN’ series, recently spoke candidly about the box office slump of ‘M3GAN 2.0’ during an interview on the podcast ‘The Town’, admitting that M3GAN’s money-making ability was overestimated.
