(Miri, 25th) The Malaysian government and the Brunei government held a formal transfer ceremony today at the Sungai Tujuh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) complex for the international transfer of a Malaysian prisoner to Brunei.
This prisoner transfer complies with Section 10 of the International Prisoner Transfer Act 2012 (Malaysia Act 754) under the "Transfer Order from Malaysia" and follows the International Prisoner Transfer Treaty signed by the Malaysian and Brunei governments on August 3, 2023.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Malaysian Prison Department, the Brunei Prison Management Bureau, and relevant agencies of both countries. Senior officials involved in the prisoner transfer process were also present to witness the event. This transfer involves one eligible prisoner currently held at Miri Central Prison, who applied for the transfer on September 11, 2023, under the "Brunei National Prisoner International Transfer Program Application" and was approved to be transferred back to his home country, Brunei, to serve the remaining sentence.
The transfer aims to allow eligible prisoners to serve their sentences in their home countries, facilitating their rehabilitation process and better reintegration into society post-release.

At the ceremony, KP Haji Ajidin (KP Haji Ajidin bin Haji Salleh), Senior Director of the Prison Policy Division at the Malaysian Prison Department, stated that the transfer reflects the two governments' high regard for prisoner welfare and the criminal justice system, emphasizing that Malaysia and Brunei should continue to strengthen cooperation in this area to ensure a more efficient and improved prisoner transfer system.
Additionally, he mentioned that besides prisoner transfer, both countries are committed to exploring more collaborations in the field of criminal justice, including prison management, prisoner rehabilitation, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in security, and sharing best practices. These collaborations are expected to further enhance the efficiency of the criminal justice systems of both countries and bring greater benefits to society overall.
This transfer ceremony was completed smoothly, adhering strictly to all established legal and security procedures. The Malaysian and Brunei governments hope to further strengthen their good relations and consider this cooperation as a model for international criminal justice system collaborations, aiming to improve overall judicial efficiency.
