(US, 26th) US President Trump posted on social media, stating that Iran’s enriched uranium should either be transported back to the US for destruction, or destroyed in Iran under international supervision.
In his Truth Social post on Monday afternoon (May 25, US Eastern Time; morning of the 26th in Singapore time), Trump said that Iran’s enriched uranium “must either be handed over to the US immediately,” to be transported home for destruction; “even better, in full collaboration and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, it should be destroyed on site or at another acceptable location,” with the entire process and related matters to be “witnessed throughout by the Atomic Energy Commission or an equivalent body.”
It is currently unclear whether the “Atomic Energy Commission” Trump referred to indicates the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
CNN believes that compared with Trump’s previous statements, this time he is showing a more “open attitude” toward involving Iran in the process of disposing of the enriched uranium.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Trump had previously threatened Iran multiple times to hand over its enriched uranium. On the 21st, he told the media at the White House that Iran must hand over its high-enriched uranium, and once the US receives it, it would likely be destroyed.
The disposal of enriched uranium is one of the main disagreements in US-Iran negotiations. Some US officials recently said that unless the enriched uranium is destroyed, there will be “no dollars”—meaning Iran’s frozen assets will not be unblocked. According to foreign media reports last week, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba has issued orders requiring that the reserve of enriched uranium must not be shipped abroad, stating that “Iranian senior officials believe that sending nuclear materials abroad will make Iran more vulnerable to US and Israeli attacks in the future.”
