Taiwan's General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC) completed its renaming process on the 17th, changing its English name to the “National Cultural Association of Taiwan” (abbreviated as NCAT). The association’s original English name was “General Association of Chinese Culture” (abbreviated as GACC).
According to reports from Taiwanese media, the association held a general meeting on Tuesday afternoon, completing the renaming process and changing its English name to NCAT. Lai Ching-te, the president of the association and President of Taiwan, attended the general meeting and said that apart from continuously enhancing Taiwan's cultural strength and actively employing the creative energies of a new generation, the association is constantly strengthening Taiwan’s cultural ties and exchanges with the international community.
Lai Ching-te also stated that the mission of the association to enhance and promote cultural strength is fundamentally built on recognizing one’s own identity, and only by deeply understanding the land’s past can Taiwan’s cultural strength truly take root.
Secretary-General Lee Hou-ching said that in recent years, as the association has actively promoted international cultural exchanges and cooperation, team members and association members were often asked overseas why the English name uses “Chinese” instead of “Taiwan,” prompting the decision to adjust the name to more clearly represent Taiwan’s cultural identity.
Lee Hou-ching also said that at a member meeting in February last year, some members raised temporary motions discussing potential confusion caused by the name “General Association of Chinese Culture;” in December of the same year, after meetings of the executive and advisory committees, it was decided to first adjust the English name to use “Taiwan” for external presentation.
