(Miri, 16th) Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism and Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting is highly concerned about the worsening coastal erosion due to recent high tides along Luodong Beach. He has sent a letter to our Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah seeking focused attention, hoping to expedite the engineering process to prevent further erosion.
This morning, upon arriving in Miri, he inspected the coastal erosion issue at Luodong Beach Road and emphasized the importance of long-term disaster resistance strategies in coastal areas. He urged the authorities to promptly arrange funds for constructing wave-breaking structures.
He stated that based on initial understanding, the RM 45 million flood control engineering fee approved in 2022 has reached the tender closing date today. He will continue to follow up on the hope that the project can commence as soon as possible to reduce the threat of floods and coastal erosion in the Luodong coastal areas.
Datuk Sebastian Ting stated in a press release that with the aggravation of climate change in recent years and continuous rising sea levels, the threat of erosion in coastal areas is becoming increasingly severe. This not only affects basic road infrastructure but also poses safety hazards to surrounding coastal residents. A wave-breaker construction plan is urgently needed.
He noted that the waves have caused severe damage to Luodong Beach Road and urged the relevant departments to expedite engineering procedures so that repair work can begin in the shortest possible time.
“Miri City Council has also placed warning signs on-site to remind road users to exercise caution and drive safely and dispatched personnel to assist in cleaning the debris, driftwood, and gravel left on the road after the tide recedes.”
He added that the series of projects aim to effectively reduce the threat of floods and coastal erosion to the Luodong coastal area through multi-layered protective measures and safeguard the safety of surrounding residents and infrastructure.
