Sarawak’s Vision Must Be Transformed Into Real Opportunities to Drive Local Economic Growth

(Talat, 23rd) — Sarawak’s development continues to be guided by the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), with a focus on economic prosperity, social inclusiveness, and environmental sustainability.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that this vision must be translated into tangible opportunities at the district and community levels, including empowering local residents to become entrepreneurs, employees, investors, and community leaders to drive local economic growth.

“Talat has huge potential in agriculture, fisheries, agro-industry, entrepreneurship, tourism, and a variety of other economic activities based on local resources. Leveraging these advantages, Talat must continuously develop in order to create new economic opportunities and enhance the well-being of the people.”

The Premier’s speech was delivered by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian at the Talat District ‘Leaders and People Gathering’ event held yesterday at Talat Waterfront Park.

The Premier mentioned in his speech that development should not be limited to raw material production, but should emphasize value addition through processing, branding, innovation, and broader market access.

Therefore, he pointed out that local products from Talat must be promoted to the whole of Sarawak and beyond, rather than just being restricted to the district or local markets.

He said that enhancing product quality, attractive packaging, effective marketing strategies, and the use of digital platforms can help local products break into wider markets.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari revealed that the youth must become part of Talat’s economic transformation, regarding agriculture, entrepreneurship, technology, and the digital economy as areas that can provide sustainable careers and income.

Speaking about Phase 3 of the Talat Waterfront Park project, he said that the project reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to providing high-quality public spaces that not only serve as essential infrastructure, but also foster social, cultural, tourism, and local economic activities.

In addition, he stated that the opening of the organic fertilizer and animal feed processing center is regarded as an important step towards strengthening Talat’s agricultural value chain.

The Premier continued by saying that this facility enables local processing of agricultural resources to produce high value-added products, thereby creating new economic opportunities and enhancing the potential income of farmers, livestock owners, and entrepreneurs.

“By processing these resources locally and producing high value-added products, we can consolidate the local supply chain and enhance the potential incomes of those involved in agricultural and livestock activities.”

Prior to this, Dr. Sim Kui Hian also officiated at the opening ceremony of the organic fertilizer processing center and Phase 3 beautification project of the Talat Waterfront Park.

Other attendees included Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Sarawak Minister of Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing Development.
