There was a border conflict on the China-India border in 2020. On the 14th, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the visiting Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar that the momentum of improvement and development in China-India relations did not come easily, and that he is willing to enhance political mutual trust with India and to properly handle contradictions and differences from an overall perspective.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, when Wang Yi held talks with Jaishankar in Beijing, he made veiled remarks about the United States, saying that the current international landscape is undergoing profound changes, and that unilateral protectionism and acts of bullying and hegemony are bringing severe challenges to the world. As two neighboring great Eastern civilizations and major emerging economies, the essence of China-India relations is how to coexist in harmony and achieve mutual success.
Wang Yi said the momentum of improvement and development in China-India relations had been hard-won and should be cherished. China is willing to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, demonstrate the strategic vision of major emerging powers, consistently enhance political mutual trust, move toward each other to expand exchanges and cooperation, properly handle contradictions and differences from the larger perspective, strengthen coordination and cooperation on multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and promote the continuous, healthy, and stable development of China-India relations.
Wang Yi said China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with India to jointly safeguard the multilateral trading system, the stability of global production and supply chains, and the international environment of openness and cooperation, and to promote equal and orderly multipolarity in the world and inclusive and beneficial economic globalization.
According to the Chinese side's press release, Jaishankar stated that both sides should strive to accumulate positive factors in bilateral relations, avoid allowing differences to become disputes, and prevent competition from turning into conflict. As important neighbors, populous nations, and major world economies, India-China relations have regional and global significance.
He said that India adheres to strategic autonomy, pursues an independent foreign policy, and is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China in multilateral fields to promote the establishment of a multipolar world.
According to foreign media reports, Jaishankar told Wang Yi that in order to normalize China-India relations, the two countries must resolve border frictions, withdraw troops, and avoid "restrictive trade measures."
This is Jaishankar's first visit to China since the deadly border confrontation between Chinese and Indian troops in 2020. The conflict led to a four-year military standoff and a breakdown in relations. It was not until October last year, when the two countries agreed to pull their troops back, that China-India relations began to thaw.
