Sarawak Premier: Unity and Stability as the Foundation for Economic Transformation in Sarawak

Published at Dec 08, 2024 12:20 pm

(Miri, 8th) The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, emphasized that unity, social and political stability are the foundation for driving economic transformation. He pointed out that transformation is quicker and more effective than change and is key to Sarawak's development.

As Abang Johari was unable to personally attend the opening ceremony of the 15th Miri Christmas Parade, he entrusted the Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas, to read out his speech on his behalf. He also highly praised the efforts of the people of Miri in promoting social cohesion and multicultural harmony.

“It is through events like the Christmas Parade that we can unite and celebrate this joyful moment together. The uniqueness of Miri city lies in its harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures, which is also a microcosm of the overall unity of Sarawak.”

He specifically thanked the organizing committee led by Miri City Mayor Yu Xiao Shan for successfully organizing this grand event, adding a strong festive atmosphere for the upcoming Christmas. It is reported that this year's Miri Christmas Parade is the 15th edition, attracting enthusiastic participation from the people of Miri and outsiders, including a delegation of 20 tourists led by Ms. Violeta Baldasan Saldar, the representative from Trinidad City, Philippines.

UNIFOR Emphasizes the Spirit of Inclusion

Abang Johari also mentioned the importance of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR). He pointed out that UNIFOR is a unique institution in Sarawak, dedicated to preserving and passing on values of mutual respect, while reflecting Sarawak's commitment to building an inclusive society.

“Since 2017, the Sarawak state government has allocated RM 385 million through UNIFOR for the construction and repair of hundreds of religious places throughout the state, which also covers the operation of mission schools. These aids have alleviated the burden on religious institutions and improved the facilities of worship places.”

He emphasized that Sarawak is the only state in the country providing financial support to non-Islamic religions. This not only reflects Sarawak's concrete actions in social inclusion policy but also sets a good example for the nation.

Record Budget to Drive Sarawak's Economic Growth

Abang Johari took this opportunity to share key information regarding the state budget for 2025. He stated that next year's Sarawak budget will reach a record high of RM 15.8 billion, an increase of RM 2.2 billion from this year, representing a 16% increase.

“Our economy is growing steadily, enabling us to invest more in public facilities construction and infrastructure development while attracting more foreign investors.”

He mentioned that Sarawak's green economy policy has put it at the forefront globally in addressing climate change, with more and more foreign companies opting to invest here due to Sarawak's resources and forward-thinking policies.

“If our revenue continues to increase, we can give back to the people in more forms, including aids, projects, and plans, thereby further improving the quality of life.”

He reiterated that Sarawak's multicultural harmony is a valuable heritage left by the ancestors and must continue to be cherished and safeguarded. “Through tonight's Christmas Parade, everyone has shown commitment to unity, contributing to strengthening the power of multiracial coexistence. This is not just a festive event, it is also an opportunity to promote mutual respect and inclusion.”
