(Miri, 15th) Hosted by Miri Wujang College, the 2025 58th Athletic Championship was grandly opened this morning at the Miri Outdoor Stadium, marking the official start of the two-day event.
The originally scheduled guest to officiate the opening, Sarawak's Minister of Transport and State Assemblyman for Senadin, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. In his place, Miri City Councilor Toh Kah Shiong attended and read his speech.
In the opening speech, Toh Kah Shiong conveyed on behalf of Lee Kim Shin that the athletic championship is not only a platform for students to showcase their sports talents but also an important venue for cultivating discipline, cooperative spirit, and a fighting will.
He emphasized that the significance of the event lies not only in competing for medals but also in promoting the values of respect, unity, and sportsmanship.
“Just as the team names we see today—Patinggi Ali, Panglima Seman, Rosli Dhobi, and Rentap—symbolize the heroic spirit of Sarawak’s forefathers against enemies, I believe students can likewise strive for excellent performances on the field,” he said.

He also encouraged all athletes to cherish the opportunity to compete, perform at their best, and understand the mental and physical benefits brought by sports. “Regardless of winning or losing, true victory comes from relentless effort and unwavering sportsmanship.”
In addition, he extended special respect toward the event organizers and all faculty members, praising their efforts and contributions to the event. “Without your silent dedication behind the scenes, this grand event would not have succeeded.”
He also called on the audience to give enthusiastic support and encouragement to the participating students, allowing each athlete to feel the power from their peers and the community, injecting vitality into campus sports.
This year's championship has attracted enthusiastic participation from the entire school faculty and students, creating a lively atmosphere. It is not only a competitive match but also a practical lesson in cohesion and spiritual education.
