(Bandar Seri Begawan, 13th) June 14th each year is World Blood Donor Day. Countries around the world carry out related activities to raise public awareness of the importance of safe, high-quality, and adequate blood and blood product supplies to meet patient treatment needs, and to express the highest respect and gratitude to voluntary blood donors.

This year's World Blood Donor Day theme is "A Drop of Human Kindness, Donate Blood and Save Lives", emphasizing that humanity lies at the core of every blood donation. Blood donation is not only a medical procedure, but a humanitarian act symbolizing solidarity, compassion, and social responsibility. Every drop of blood brings the hope of life to patients.

In conjunction with World Blood Donor Day, Minister of Health Dato Isham issued a statement pointing out that despite ongoing advances in science, laboratory techniques, donor screening, and transfusion safety systems, the supply of safe blood still relies on the public's voluntary and regular unpaid donations.

He noted that many countries still face issues of blood shortages and uneven supplies, therefore all sectors should work together to further promote a culture of blood donation.

This year's campaign goals include: promoting continued growth in regular voluntary blood donors; enhancing public awareness of the life-saving role of blood and plasma donation; affirming the contribution of blood donors and promoting the spirit of humanity and solidarity; encouraging government agencies and related parties to continue to invest in the national blood program; and ensuring transfusion services are safe, high-quality, and timely.

The statement notes that Brunei continues to actively promote blood donation activities and publicity efforts. Through blood centers and laboratory services, the Ministry of Health cooperates with government agencies, educational institutions, the armed forces, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations to carry out mobile blood drives throughout the country.

In 2025, the blood center recorded a total of 13,785 blood donors and successfully collected 16,807 units of blood, including 3,289 newly registered donors, demonstrating continued social support for the blood supply.

The data also meets the World Health Organization recommendation that the blood donation rate reaches 1% to 3% of the total population to meet the country's emergency medical needs.

Brunei's blood product usage rate in 2025 reached 2.3%, consistent with the level since 2014.

To further strengthen the national transfusion system, the Ministry of Health will continue to advance measures for blood safety, quality assurance, and clinical transfusion management, including strengthening blood monitoring systems, transfusion operation supervision, and blood screening procedures to ensure that blood products meet international standards.

The Ministry will also expand public education, increase awareness of regular voluntary blood donation, and emphasize the importance of youth participation in building a sustainable pool of blood donors.

The authorities call on all sectors of society to actively participate, viewing blood donation as a social responsibility and act of public welfare, and encourage government agencies, the education sector, the armed forces, businesses, and NGOs to jointly organize blood donation events to maintain an adequate national blood supply.

The statement concludes by expressing gratitude to all blood donors and relevant parties, noting that each unit of blood can save up to three patients' lives, and calls on those who have not yet participated to actively join the ranks of blood donors and work together to protect community health and safety.
