UBD Students Promote Health, Highlight Dangers of Forward Head Posture

Published at Sep 09, 2025 02:21 pm
(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) Forward Head Posture (FHP) is a common yet often overlooked postural issue that is becoming increasingly prevalent due to prolonged use of smartphones, computers, tablets, and poor ergonomic design in workplaces.
This posture can lead to jaw and neck pain, headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, mouth breathing, and decreased oxygen intake, which in turn affect efficiency, morale, and overall health in study and work.
This is the hazard highlighted by the "Go Brunei!" team, comprised of third-year dental students from the PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences, during the "Matcha and Wellness Day" event held at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam sports hall.
Team member Chloe Lai stated, "Our event aims to emphasize that FHP is not a trivial issue—it affects breathing, energy levels, and even long-term health. Through wellness days like today, we aim to promote healthier habits via ergonomics, exercise, and mindfulness."
She added, "By incorporating matcha into our wellness day, we are reminded that health is not just about posture or physique, but also about the subtle yet meaningful choices we make every day."
Chloe emphasized that proceeds from fundraising during this event will support the Children’s Cancer Foundation (YASKA), contributing to improving the lives of children and families assisted by the foundation. The event aims to encourage office workers and students to self-identify FHP, highlight the link between FHP and dentofacial complications, general health, and musculoskeletal disorders, and promote management and prevention techniques.
Before the ceremony concluded, the "Go Brunei!" team presented certificates of appreciation to event sponsors. Afterwards, UBD Acting Registrar and Secretary Joanna, along with other guests, toured the vendors’ booths at the event site.
