Taiwan’s largest opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), held its party chair election on Saturday (October 18), with former legislator Cheng Li-wen emerging victorious. Hsiao Hsu-tsen, executive director of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation and former president of Taiwan, conveyed Ma Ying-jeou’s congratulations to Cheng Li-wen, encouraging her to adhere to the 1992 Consensus, oppose Taiwan independence, and promote cross-strait relations after taking office.
According to a report by ETtoday News, Hsiao Hsu-tsen said that Ma Ying-jeou hopes Cheng Li-wen will work to strengthen party unity. As a generational baton has now been passed, senior and junior party members must “march together for a long journey,” so that the Kuomintang may grow stronger, bringing cross-strait peace and well-being to the people of Taiwan.
Ma Ying-jeou also hopes Cheng Li-wen will promote “blue-white” (KMT and Taiwan People’s Party) cooperation, win next year’s 2026 county and municipal elections, and lead the KMT back to power in 2028.
Hsiao Hsu-tsen said Ma Ying-jeou also affirmed the efforts of outgoing Kuomintang Chairman Eric Chu, noting that Chu had led the KMT in regaining its status as the largest party, successfully winning many electoral battles, and guiding the KMT through two major recall challenges. This, Ma said, proved that President of Taiwan and Democratic Progressive Party Chairman Lai Ching-te's “anti-China, pro-Taiwan” strategy does not win public support, and “all KMT members are grateful for Chairman Chu’s contributions.”
