Deliberate Highlighting of Party Spirit Shapes Leader: Chinese State Media Celebrates Xi Jinping's Birthday in Disguise

The CCP held a national party building work symposium on Monday, at which the concept of "Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building" was proposed for the first time. In addition, despite the CCP's tradition of not publicly celebrating leaders' birthdays, state broadcaster CCTV aired a 6-minute-20-second film titled "Communist Party Member Xi Jinping" on Monday, indirectly celebrating CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping's birthday by highlighting his party spirit.

According to reports, "Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building" is of milestone significance in the development of Marxist party-building theory and the history of party-building in the Chinese Communist Party. It stated that "Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building" insists on advancing the trinity of "daring not to be corrupt, not being able to be corrupt, and not wanting to be corrupt," adheres to "governing the Party by system and according to rules," and upholds implementing political responsibility for governing the Party. It is "rich in connotation and tightly structured."

In addition, Ming Pao reported that June 15 is Xi Jinping's 73rd birthday. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev all sent birthday congratulations.

CCP leaders have a tradition of "not holding birthday celebrations"; the officially released birthdate of leaders usually mentions only the month without the date. Even if foreign leaders send birthday wishes to Chinese leaders, it is not reported by state media.

However, CCTV released a film titled "Communist Party Member Xi Jinping" lasting 6 minutes and 20 seconds, which was subsequently reposted by domestic media outlets such as The Paper. To some extent, this was a subtle act to "cleverly celebrate" Xi Jinping's birthday by shaping the image of a "People's Leader."

At the beginning of the film, it plays a recording of Xi Jinping saying, "My primary identity is as a Communist Party member, and my chief responsibility is to work for the Party." The narration also mentions that he joined the CCP in January 1974 in Liangjiahe, Shaanxi. "Through arduous tempering on the Loess Plateau, Xi Jinping's faith in communism became ever more steadfast," and he resolved that, if given the conditions and the opportunity, he would engage in politics in the future and do some good work for the people.
