Joey Wong Avoids Addressing Exploitation Rumors, Posts New Year Selfie Claiming 'Visiting Home'

Published at Jan 03, 2026 04:09 pm
The 58-year-old actress Joey Wong, once hailed as the “forever Xiao Qian” for her role in the film 'A Chinese Ghost Story', has settled in Canada following her retirement from acting. Last February, she opened a wellness moxibustion clinic there, and was recently rumored to have exploited employees by offering wages that allegedly do not match the living costs in Canada. As of press time, Wong has not responded to the controversy, but she did share a selfie for 2026, wishing everyone a happy New Year and stating, 'I’m back home.'

Joey Wong’s moxibustion wellness center operates by appointment, charging 120 Canadian dollars (about 354 Ringgit) per hour. She is often present in the store herself, attracting many fans to pay pilgrimage. However, someone claiming to be an employee of the center disclosed that Wong only pays technicians a wage of 6 Canadian dollars (about 17.7 Ringgit) per hour, which is far below Canada’s minimum wage standard, sparking suspicions of her being an exploitative boss. Since the whistleblower did not provide concrete evidence, many netizens voiced support for Joey Wong, arguing that people should not easily trust online rumors nor haphazardly attach a negative label to her.

It is worth mentioning that employees of the moxibustion center have previously posted praise about Joey Wong, describing her as genuine and passionate about her work. She reportedly begins her day before 6 a.m. and remains busy until the evening, which has completely changed the staff’s impression of their ‘goddess boss’. Furthermore, as Joey Wong has not specifically addressed the alleged exploitation controversy, the authenticity of the incident still remains to be verified.
