Major Suspect Arrested in Case of Chinese Citizens Tricked to Thai-Myanmar Border, Claims WeChat Account was Hacked

Recently, cases where multiple Chinese citizens were tricked and taken to the Thai-Myanmar border, then illegally detained and forced to engage in telecom network fraud, have drawn attention. The Ministry of Public Security of China swiftly mobilized relevant local police agencies to fully carry out the rescue of individuals and the investigation of cases, and also dispatched a working group to conduct operations overseas.

Through the efforts of the Ministry of Public Security's working group and the Chinese embassy in Thailand, and with the assistance of Thai law enforcement, the major suspect in related cases, Yan Wenlei (online alias "Yan Sixteen"), was brought to justice and returned to China on the night of January 25. At present, Chinese public security agencies are fully engaged in case investigations.

A relevant spokesperson from the Ministry of Public Security stated that the public security agencies will pursue a more determined and vigorous crackdown, continuously deepen international law enforcement cooperation, strengthen coordination with relevant countries, make every effort to apprehend criminal suspects, fully coordinate the rescue of trapped individuals, and maximize the reduction of opportunities for cross-border crime, firmly safeguarding the personal and property safety of Chinese citizens.

The public security agencies remind the general public to remain vigilant, enhance safety precautions, and not to readily believe in high-paying job offers or employment information from overseas, to avoid falling into criminal traps.

According to media reports on the 27th, Yan Wenlei allegedly invited at least 10 industry insiders to Thailand for filming, including actor Wang Xing. At least four entertainment industry workers were deceived into going to Thailand; among them, two have been rescued, while two remain missing.

In any case, Yan Wenlei claims that his WeChat account was hacked, and that the recent events in the past month have nothing to do with him. He further stated that he has never contacted anyone, urging caution in accepting roles.
