As China-US artificial intelligence (AI) competition heats up, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that the US should not seek a competitive advantage by banning Chinese AI models.
In an interview published Tuesday by the UK’s Financial Times, Zuckerberg said that banning advanced Chinese AI models in the US is not an “effective solution.”
He also warned that leading US AI labs could leverage “regulatory capture” to suppress domestic competition.
In mid-July, Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI launched the Kimi K3 model, which attracted attention in the tech community for its performance comparable to the West’s top closed-source models, and also challenged the widely held belief that “US AI technology remains far ahead of China.”
At the same time, Moonshot AI has denied that Kimi K3 is a distilled or replicated version of existing models, stating that K3’s performance leap stems from original architectural innovation at the foundational level.
China’s Ministry of Commerce stated that many US AI companies have also distilled Chinese models in their research and training.
