Chinese rising star Zhao Lusi previously had contract disputes with her agency, but recently her new drama “Promise Me Brilliance” co-starring William Chan was suddenly released without notice. Within just four days of its premiere, the show’s popularity exceeded the 30,000 mark, making it the fastest drama this year to hit that benchmark—the response has been overwhelming.
On September 30, Zhao Lusi went live again and talked about how there was no marketing for “Promise.” She actually saw this as a good thing: “You all are the best publicity. The quality of the show and your love are what spread it. It saves money and we get to see authentic reviews—both good and bad, and that’s great.” She praised the director for treating her very well, trusting and protecting her, and said she got along happily with the other actors. Because of this, she felt relieved that the show was able to air smoothly: “I’m really happy that my personal issues didn’t affect the show. I feel okay now, otherwise I would’ve felt sorry for so many people—this was everyone’s hard work.”
During the livestream, some trolls left comments like “You don’t look like a good person” and “Your mouth looks weird” to attack her, but Zhao Lusi didn’t shy away—instead, she read them out loud and responded: “You’re right, I’m not a good person. ‘Your mouth looks weird’—yeah, it does. Compared to you guys, the person who dislikes me the most is myself. I used to really dislike myself, but now it’s much better. What I used to feel was wrong was actually stuff other people told me was wrong. Why should I listen to your idea of ‘wrong’? What you say is wrong doesn’t really mean anything.”
Although quite a few comments targeted changes in Zhao Lusi’s appearance, she answered them one by one: “Someone asked why my face looks smaller—my face really isn’t small, not among actresses. It’s just smaller than before because I lost weight and my protein levels went down. A lot of people say my nose looks higher. That’s actually because my cheek fat dropped, and as I lost protein on both sides of my face, my nose looks more prominent. I hope my honest answer helps you. Is my state kind of bad? My state has always been kind of bad, but I think it’s fine. As long as I feel good, that’s what matters. Why does my face look weird in the show? Maybe because the character I play is a bit fake, so I have to hold that vibe. That could be why.”
