(Miri 20th) The Tudan Industrial Area in Miri has recently been plagued by towering piles of garbage and a foul stench, causing widespread complaints among the public. However, the Miri City Council remains indifferent, allowing the garbage issue to deteriorate, severely affecting the cityscape and quality of life for residents.
Democratic Action Party Sarawak Secretary Alan Ling pointed out that the city council has not only failed to properly address the urban cleanliness issue but is instead focused on collecting various taxes such as assessment and license fees, neglecting their fundamental responsibility to maintain urban hygiene and environment.
"After the garbage problem in the Emart commercial area, now the Tudan Industrial Area has become a new garbage hotspot. Does the city council intend to wait until the entire city of Miri becomes a garbage dump before taking action?"
It is reported that the Miri City Council previously cancelled the measure of placing large garbage bins, resulting in strong social discontent. The authorities now require citizens to transport their garbage to the Kuala Baram dump site, leading to the current chaotic situation.
He emphasized that the garbage problem not only affects aesthetics but also poses a threat to public health, as it can breed mosquitoes and bacteria, leading to the spread of diseases.
Alan Ling demands that the city council take immediate action to thoroughly clean up the areas in Miri facing the problem of garbage piling up and to formulate a long-term waste management plan to prevent similar issues from recurring. He stressed that the Miri City Council must fulfill its duties, otherwise the people will not sit by idly.
