(Miri, 22nd) Malaysian Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Chiew Choon Man, stated that contemporary ethnic design and the creative industry not only showcase Sarawak’s profound cultural heritage, but also infuse vitality into the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), driving tourism diversification and sustainable development.

Chiew Choon Man, who is also the Member of Parliament for Miri, made these remarks while delivering a speech at the “Sarawak Contemporary Ethnic Design Showcase Dinner” held at the Eastwood Golf Club last night.

He pointed out that modern tourism has shifted from traditional sightseeing to the pursuit of authentic cultural experiences and sustainable products. The ethnic designs, contemporary artworks, handmade textiles, and innovative pineapple leaf fiber products showcased at the dinner perfectly meet the international tourism market’s expectations for “originating from tradition, embodying innovation.”

Chiew Choon Man also conveyed greetings from the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, on his behalf. The Minister was unable to attend due to official duties, but conveyed his full support for the event and wished it complete success.

He praised the joint efforts by the Miri Oil Town Rotary Club and Inland Women’s Association in organizing this event, reflecting the spirit of service organizations and indigenous women’s groups collaborating to nurture local talent and promote cultural heritage.

He said this dinner was not only a showcase event, but also symbolized empowerment and economic opportunities, highlighting the confidence and resilience of Sarawak’s multiculturalism. By supporting women entrepreneurs from the Kelabit, Kayan, Kanau, Penan, Iban, and Lun Bawang communities, tourism revenue can flow to grassroots levels and realize inclusive, people-centered development concepts.

He emphasized that the creative and cultural industries can enrich tourism products and increase their added value. Tourists not only appreciate natural scenery, but also want to bring home uniquely Malaysian designs and handicrafts, thereby strengthening the creative tourism ecosystem.

In addition, green and innovative products such as pineapple leaf fiber showcase Sarawak’s efforts in environmental protection and sustainable production, giving the state an advantage as the global tourism industry places increasing emphasis on eco-friendliness.

Chiew Choon Man pointed out that VM2026 is not merely a promotional campaign, but a nationwide movement requiring the concerted efforts of the government, enterprises, non-governmental organizations, and communities.

He called on corporate partners and the industry to continue supporting the local creative industry, and to help Sarawak’s ethnic designs enter the international stage through brand building and digital promotion.

He also encouraged designers and artists to continue their creative efforts and serve as cultural ambassadors, sharing Sarawak’s and Malaysia’s stories, values, and identity worldwide.

He hopes that all sectors will join hands so that VM2026 will showcase not only tourism attractions but also the cultural soul and diversity of the nation.
