Hollywood Superstar Angelina Jolie Arrives in Egypt to Focus on Gaza Humanitarian Situation

Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie arrived in Arish, Egypt on the 2nd to assess the humanitarian situation in Gaza and review the progress in delivering aid supplies to the region. As Israel has delayed reopening the Rafah crossing and allowing aid through according to the ceasefire agreement, the international community is increasingly concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

According to Egyptian media “Egypt Independent,” Angelina Jolie arrived in Arish on the northern Sinai Peninsula on the 2nd, accompanied by a delegation from the US State Department. She plans to visit the Rafah Crossing to examine the local humanitarian situation and to learn about the progress in delivering aid to Gaza.

The report said that Jolie’s itinerary also includes visiting the Arish General Hospital, where she will meet with injured Palestinians currently receiving treatment and assess their health status as well as the quality of medical services.

An Egyptian Red Crescent volunteer told Jolie that thousands of aid trucks are lined up at the crossing, waiting to enter Gaza to deliver supplies to the war-ravaged people of Gaza.

According to the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10 last year, the Rafah crossing was supposed to be reopened, but it is still under Israeli control and remains restricted. In early December, Israel announced that Rafah crossing would only be open for those wishing to leave Gaza.

On the 2nd, Egypt and six other countries issued a joint statement calling on the international community to pressure Israel to immediately lift restrictions and allow aid to enter and be distributed within Gaza.

Jolie is actively involved in international charity work, with a particular focus on refugee relief. She served as a UNHCR special envoy for over 20 years, before stepping down at the end of 2022. (News source: CNA)
