Prime Minister Anutin Confirms: Provinces Do Not Need to Cancel Loy Krathong Festival Activities

Published at Oct 29, 2025 04:46 pm
On the 29th, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Anutin stated that the Deputy Minister of the Interior has issued a clear notice clarifying that there is no need for each province to cancel Loy Krathong Festival activities; adjustments only need to be made according to government department guidelines.

He made the remarks to the media at the Royal Thai Air Force Base 6.

He also expressed his approval of last week's BLACKPINK concert in Bangkok, stating that the event proceeded smoothly, the public was cooperative, and everyone respected the mourning atmosphere.

Regarding the proposal to retain traditional festivals to commemorate Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother's passing, Anutin said that commemorative activities have been ongoing and are not limited to the national mourning period. If there are opportunities to organize memorial events, such as for King Rama IX's Birthday, relevant segments will be arranged as well.

He noted that, since the mourning period needs consideration for forms of expression, all kinds of activities will be publicly announced, and government departments have already reached a consensus on holding events, including various measures and guidelines, so the public need not worry.

Loy Krathong, New Year, and Songkran Will Be Held as Planned

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Sudawan, stated on the 28th that Thailand's major festivals—Loy Krathong, New Year, and Songkran—will still be held as planned.

He refuted rumors about festival activities being canceled, believing that they are attempts to deliberately stir up public emotions.

Speaking at the Bangkok Government House, he said preparations for Loy Krathong and the Southeast Asian Games are proceeding smoothly according to international standards.

He also said that the ministry would not impose bans or strict regulations on celebrations, but would ask private organizers to cooperate in making appropriate adjustments. For state-sponsored events, arrangements will be discussed with supporters and agencies according to agreed conditions.

He emphasized that scheduled or invested-in activities should face minimal disruption as they have significant impacts on both domestic and international tourism.

Regarding attempts by political groups to politicize these events, Mr. Sudawan said that such actions are malicious.

He added: “My work is not based on public pressure. I focus on doing what is right and appropriate.”

He confirmed that the New Year countdown and next year's Songkran Festival will be held as usual, with festivities similar to last year, though the format will match the prevailing atmosphere.
