Cheng Li-wen, Chairperson of Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang, said in an interview with influencer '館長' (“Gym Owner”) that Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping considers Taiwan as family, saying, “They only wish to treat us well, why would they want to attack you?”
According to reports from Liberty Times, ETToday News Cloud, and CTI News, after meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing last week, Cheng Li-wen stated in a live interview on Thursday (the 16th) that preparations for the 2027 presidential election are about to begin. She said this is a choice between war and peace. The Kuomintang wants to prove to the world that neither side of the strait wants war, and both desire a peaceful and stable relationship. She also wants to prove that “this is not just my wishful thinking,” which is why she went to meet Xi Jinping.
Cheng Li-wen said that everyone wants to see Xi Jinping’s attitude, and that he truly went off-script and expressed genuine feelings, with much to say. “It feels like he really wants to treat us as family.” Unfortunately, she added, the past has sadly seen many barriers and misunderstandings.
She cited the DPP camp’s politicians’ claim that China’s high-speed rail has “no seat backs” as an example, stating that both sides should have empathy for each other and stop constantly provoking and humiliating the mainland for no reason, instead of recognizing the mainland’s many world-leading achievements.
Cheng Li-wen said: “He (Xi Jinping) specifically emphasized that we are all one family, you can't even deny your own ancestors. We have common ancestors and share the same ethnicity—what deep-seated hatred or barriers require things to be this way? ... The mainland’s development has already become Taiwan people’s source of confidence. It will not become a threat to people in Taiwan, but rather an opportunity for them.”
Cheng Li-wen also believes both sides are one family: “They only wish to treat us well, why would they want to attack you?” She claimed that the mainland sincerely doesn't want war and hopes for peace, unlike the DPP which creates hatred and confrontation. So when she extended her hand, “they wished nothing more than to hold it tightly, letting her feel their warmth and sincerity.”
Cheng Li-wen emphasized, “The so-called resorting to force from the mainland is just targeted at Taiwan independence. Simply put, it is just the 1992 Consensus and opposition to Taiwan independence. When former President Ma Ying-jeou was in power, nothing happened, so there are no other conditions or barriers beyond that.”
Cheng Li-wen believes that this visit to the mainland was to confirm and prove to the world that as long as we don't keep poking the mainland with Two-State Theory or Taiwan independence, but instead return to ‘everyone is one family, all Chinese people, all for the good of the Chinese people', then what we’ll get will be entirely different. If both sides can cooperate and interact properly, “the dividends of peace will be limitless.”
