(Kuala Lumpur, 26th) As the ASEAN chair country, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that he has sent a letter to US President Trump to hold a meeting between ASEAN and the United States.
“I sent a letter to President Trump, seeking his understanding and support for holding a meeting between the US and ASEAN.”
Anwar made this statement while delivering the opening speech for the 46th ASEAN Summit, particularly when mentioning the US tariff issue.
He mentioned that geopolitical order is undergoing changes, and the global trade system is facing further pressure, as evidenced by the recent implementation of unilateral tariff measures by the US.
“We are witnessing the disintegration of multilateralism and the resurgence of protectionism.”
He indicated that dialogue with the United States reflects the commitment to the principle of ASEAN centrality, as well as our aspiration and responsibility. The future of ASEAN must be built on the two pillars of equitable, sustainable growth and enduring resilience.
Regarding the Myanmar issue, Anwar mentioned that an informal advisory group led by former Thai PM Thaksin will continue discussions on the Myanmar crisis in Cambodia.
As an informal advisory group of the ASEAN rotating chair country, the group has previously met in Brunei and Thailand.
“We have made some progress in our efforts to resolve the Myanmar crisis, and we are very honored that the next meeting will be hosted by former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.”
Anwar emphasized the importance of quiet diplomacy throughout the process, noting that although the steps may be small and the bridges may be fragile, as the saying goes, even a fragile bridge is better than an ever-widening gap in issues of peace.
