Government Ensures Students Won’t Miss School Due to Poverty – Women’s Aid Association Awards Scholarships and Academic Excellence Prizes

(Miri, 1st) Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, pointed out that the Sarawak government attaches great importance to the next generation as future leaders, and has long continuously assisted students in their pursuit of education through various policies, including the implementation of a free university education program.

The first phase of the program covers a total of 64 courses, aiming to enable more Sarawak students not to miss out on further studies due to financial reasons. At the same time, pocket money is also distributed to students from underprivileged families to ease their families' burdens.

He called on parents to actively encourage their children to make full use of the educational resources provided by the government, study diligently, work hard to achieve success, and give back to society and the country.

Lee, who is also the Permanent Honorary Advisor of the Miri City Women's Aid Association, expressed these remarks in his speech during the association's Education Scholarship and Members' Children Academic Excellence Award ceremony held at Tai Po Hall on New Year's Day morning.

He said that with the start of the new year in 2026, seeing the children grow year by year brings great comfort, and he thanked parents for their long-term dedication and support towards their children's education.

He pointed out that this event carries significant meaning, and the number of participants is increasing each year, showing society's attention to and support for education.

He especially emphasized that the association has added a new "Special Award for Excellent Academic and Moral Performance" this year, with a total of 40 students receiving the award. This embodies the educational philosophy of "emphasizing both learning and character." He hopes that next year, more children will make progress in their studies while also cultivating good character. He also encouraged the children not only to achieve good grades and character, but also to pay attention to mental and physical health and develop in a well-rounded way.
