(Bandar Seri Begawan, 29th) Brunei has reiterated its commitment to a just and inclusive energy transition, emphasizing efforts to integrate renewable energy and modern grid technologies to support national and regional energy security.
According to a press release from the Brunei Prime Minister's Office, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister of Defence Pehin Halbi made the above remarks during the 15th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministers’ Meeting (EMM) held in Busan, South Korea, from August 27 to 28.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister's Office, Farida, and senior officials, the minister joined counterparts from the region to discuss advancing sustainable, affordable, reliable, secure, and innovative energy systems.
At the meeting, Brunei emphasized that its energy transition strategy is not limited to the deployment of renewable energy, but rather focuses on balancing and responsibly integrating traditional oil and gas with clean energy sources. This approach reflects Brunei's determination to fulfill its climate commitments and maintain economic growth while safeguarding energy security.
Brunei aims for renewable energy to account for 30% of total electricity generation by 2035, which will be driven by the nation's largest solar photovoltaic project—a 30-megawatt power plant scheduled for completion in 2026.
In remarks during the session on "Strengthening Grid Security and Reliability," the minister highlighted the importance of a modernized, resilient, and flexible grid as a pillar of energy security. The minister stressed that Brunei is working to explore utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance solar grid integration and boost grid reliability, thereby achieving its renewable energy goals.
The minister also reiterated Brunei’s commitment to regional cooperation through projects such as the Brunei-Sarawak power interconnection under the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, while encouraging deeper collaboration with APEC partners to advance secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy systems.
The two-day meeting concluded with a Joint Ministerial Statement, and the next APEC Energy Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to be hosted by China in 2026.
