On the 12th, the Philippines held midterm elections, with former President Duterte, currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands, running for mayor of his hometown, Davao City. After the votes were counted, he was far ahead, ensuring his election.
Duterte was indicted for “crimes against humanity” by the International Criminal Court in March for his drug war campaign during his presidency. He was arrested at Manila airport and sent to The Hague for detention.
According to the unofficial count reaching 80%, Duterte will win the mayoral election, with his vote count being more than eight times that of his nearest competitor.
It remains unclear how Duterte will assume the mayoral office, as his daughter, Vice President Sara, disclosed that lawyers are discussing the matter.
Since Duterte’s son, Sebastian, is poised to become Davao’s vice mayor (the mayor and vice mayor are voted separately), it is possible that Sebastian may serve as acting mayor.
Duterte’s old Facebook account has seen an influx of congratulatory messages from supporters, some of whom hope for his return to serve the people.
The Duterte family has significant political influence and dominance in Davao City; however, his daughter Sara is currently facing impeachment trial. If found guilty, she may be permanently banned from politics, blocking her path to a presidential bid.
