(MIRI, 11th) Miri Maritime Enforcement Bureau Deputy Director Markus stated that the bureau conducted a total of 33 arrest operations in Miri waters this year, resulting in fines exceeding 15 million ringgit.
He mentioned that these cases involved various illegal activities, including offenses under the Malaysian Fisheries Act, smuggling of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes, and the seizure of foreign fishing vessels from Vietnam and Indonesia, among other notable cases.
Markus made this statement during the 2024 press conference held at the bureau's meeting room, noting that the total number of detainees this year was 152, including 27 locals and 125 foreigners.
“This year's fine amount reached 15 million ringgit, which includes court fines, fuel and fish auction proceeds, compounds, and the value of seized items. This demonstrates the success of the Miri Maritime Bureau in conducting effective and efficient enforcement actions.”
He added that the Miri Maritime Bureau also successfully achieved the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) set by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM). To date, the bureau's personnel operated at sea for a total of 542 days, conducting 2,768 inspections and 1,115 searches.
“Throughout the entire year, there were no records of any maritime emergencies or incidents in the Miri sea area. This achievement is a result of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency members' dedication to maintaining the safety and sovereignty of national waters. I also want to emphasize the continued improvement in maritime enforcement and security work to ensure the continued safety and protection of national waters.”
He emphasized that the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will continue to commit to strengthening operations and will make no concessions to any parties involved in improper conduct or criminal activities within Malaysian waters.
