Thailand Denies Plans to Use Military Force to Seize Disputed Temple Area

On the 11th, Thai Army spokesperson Winthai responded to previous accusations by the Cambodian Ministry of Defense, stating that the remarks made by Lieutenant General Wanchin, Commander of Thailand’s Second Army Region, did not mention any plan to use military force regarding the disputed temple, and were not as provocative as the Cambodian side claimed.

In an interview with Thai media on the 10th, Wanchin said that regarding the two temples along the Thai-Cambodian border where territorial disputes exist, the Thai side is considering imposing a blockade on one of them to prevent Cambodian entry. As for the other temple, where the Cambodian side has an advantage, Thailand is determined to take it back. Earlier on the 11th, Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Marie Souchad said that Wanchin's statement involved plans for military action against Cambodia and violated the ceasefire agreement reached between the two countries.

Winthai explained that Wanchin's remarks on the 10th meant that the disputed temple currently under Cambodian advantage falls within Thailand's sovereign territory. During previous conflicts, the Thai side attempted to seize the temple through military deployment but was unsuccessful; currently, Thai troops are stationed 30 meters outside the temple. In the future, it must be returned under Thai administration through appropriate procedures. Wanchin also stated that preparations are being made to discuss and negotiate these matters within the framework of the upcoming regional boundary committee meeting to be held in two weeks, and reiterated that Thailand will not withdraw from its current line of deployment.
