(Bandar Seri Begawan, 14th) The Jide Care Association’s signature cultural event, “Cultural Academy,” welcomed distinguished guests from the Chinese Embassy in Brunei on the evening of the 12th, joining in a wonderful banquet themed around Dragon Boat Festival culture.
Embassy Counselor’s wife Wu Yi led the group, accompanied by Mrs. Zhu Ting, wife of the Commercial Counselor, and four embassy secretaries. Together with participants, they shared the festive culture and profound connotations of the Dragon Boat Festival.
The event began with host Shen Renxiang opening with the idiom “Hán Yīng Jǔ Huá” (Absorbing the Essence), leading all the attendees in reciting the first chapter of the “Tao Te Ching” together. He stressed the importance of internalizing classic masterpieces and encouraged everyone to frequently review, savor, and reflect on them, drawing wisdom and strength from within.
During the Dragon Boat Festival segment, teacher Xu Lili delved into the festival’s literary background, giving a detailed introduction to Qu Yuan’s historical status and literary achievements, as well as exploring later generations’ evaluations and influence of his works. Teacher Pan Weifang shared vivid personal stories about “Dragon Boat Festival Flavors,” reminiscing about traditional customs from her hometown such as eating the “five yellows” and “five whites”. Shen Renxiang approached from the perspective of folklore studies, comprehensively introducing the origin, related legends, and celebration methods of the Dragon Boat Festival, as well as providing additional analysis of Qu Yuan’s life stories and artistic accomplishments.
Next, the event moved into a sharing session about the story of “Qiaopi” (overseas Chinese letters). Shen Renxiang recounted the historical background of Qiaopi, the hardships endured by overseas Chinese as they “crossed the seas,” and the development of Qiaopi and remittance letters. Through specific examples, he highlighted the emotional bonds and life hardships embedded in Qiaopi. Shen Zongxiang then introduced the film “Letter to My Mother,” a current hit, analyzing its plot background and giving details about its screening schedule and viewing arrangements in Brunei.
In the sharing segment, Counselor’s wife Wu Yi spoke about her deep insights about culture from her own experiences of study and growth. She also introduced China’s overall efforts in promoting cultural development in recent years, expressing her genuine admiration for overseas Chinese in their steadfastness and transmission of Chinese culture.
At the end of the event, the Jide Care Association presented Counselor’s wife a calligraphy piece of Mao Zedong’s poem “The Long March,” written by Lu Jiguang—co-chair of the Overseas Chinese Calligraphers Association from Jilin, China and president of the Swiss Calligraphers Association—as a memento, bringing a perfect close to the evening’s cultural banquet.
