(Manila, June 9 – Comprehensive report) The Bicol Regional Police Office (PRO-5) in the Philippines has activated health and emergency response teams to safeguard the safety and health of residents affected by the activity of Mayon Volcano.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Friday that this move aims to provide medical care and psychological support to meet the needs of people living around the volcano. Acting Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that this operation is being carried out under the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, prioritizing the safety and welfare of communities affected by natural disasters.
Nartatez noted, "The PNP will provide medical triage and psychological first aid, while also ensuring the safety of residents." The police force includes doctors and medical practitioners who can work together with the Department of Health (DOH) personnel. He emphasized that the PNP will continue to maintain close coordination with the Department of Health.
As of Thursday, about 983 families, totaling 3,589 people, have temporarily stayed in evacuation centers due to volcanic activity. According to the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO), the evacuees are from a six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and are distributed as follows: Tabaco City 390 households (1,399 people), Malilipot 399 households (1,466 people), Camalig 164 households (614 people), Guinobatan 4 households (16 people), and Ligao City 26 households (94 people).
National seismologists stated that the current activity level of Mayon Volcano is similar to the 2023 eruption and remains at Alert Level 3, indicating that the volcano is experiencing intensified or unstable magmatic activity.
