Suspected Leak of Yu Menglong’s Autopsy Report Raises Doubts Over Judicial Black Box

37-year-old Chinese actor Yu Menglong recently died after falling from a building, and the incident continues to spark controversy. Recently, an image of what appears to be Yu Menglong’s “official forensic autopsy report” has been circulating widely online. The contents include information about the cause of death determining unit, the commissioning police station, and details of his injuries. This has triggered a crisis of confidence in China’s forensic appraisal system, with discussions about a judicial black box once again becoming a focal point.
A widely circulated alleged autopsy report of Yu Menglong online.
According to the document, the unit responsible for Yu Menglong’s autopsy was “Beijing Shengtang Forensic Identification Institute, Autopsy Hall No. 1,” and the commissioner was “Jiatai Police Station, Chaoyang District, Beijing.” The identified project was “cause of death assessment.” However, after the report leaked, public opinion began to question: Can China’s forensic identification really be fair and transparent?

According to the current system in China, cases of unnatural death are typically handled by officially approved “third-party forensic appraisal institutions,” which are legally required to possess the qualifications outlined in the “Regulations on the Administration of Forensic Experts.” However, legal scholars point out that while these identification institutes are nominally subject to legal oversight, in practice they lack an open review mechanism. The public cannot easily check the lists of forensic experts, examination records, or sample preservation methods, making “black box operations” a systemic concern.

After “Shengtang Forensic Identification Institute” was named in this case, netizens have demanded that China’s Ministry of Justice make public its past case records and evaluation reports to clarify the facts. The circulated screenshots show that Yu Menglong was 181cm tall and suffered multiple injuries throughout his body—including scalp lacerations, bleeding from the ears, nasal bone fracture, bilateral hemothorax in the chest cavity, liver contusions and lacerations, and multiple fractures.

In addition, there are rumors that the autopsy included descriptions such as “signs of sexual assault” and “genital lacerations.” Forensic experts note that if this information is true, the combination of injuries is inconsistent with a simple fall and may suggest that violent assault occurred before the fall. For example, full dislodgement of teeth, splits in the lips, or soft tissue contusions could be caused by punching. If the body shows evidence of bleeding reactions from different time stages, it may indicate multiple injuries prior to death.

So far, Chinese authorities have neither confirmed nor denied the authenticity of the online report, nor have they responded to the “sexual assault rumors.” However, public debate has shifted from the “cause of death” to the “system” itself, and there are widespread concerns among the public about the lack of transparency and external supervision in the forensic identification process.
