(Miri, 26th) Pei Min Secondary School Form 2 student Shen Yuxuan won the championship in the abacus category (ages 13 to 18) of the 2025 Zhuzuan (Abacus) Mental Arithmetic Mathematics and Drawing East Malaysia Open Invitational, and took home the runner-up in the mental arithmetic category (ages 13 to 18), returning with honors.
The 2025 Zhuzuan Mental Arithmetic Mathematics and Drawing East Malaysia Open Invitational will be co-organized by Superman Abacus East Malaysia Main Branch and Miri Century Gallery on September 14 this year at Pei Zhong. More than 200 people participated, and the competition was very intense.
Shen Yuxuan has been studying abacus and mental arithmetic for nine years. Her initial reason for choosing abacus was to cultivate her concentration and memory, improve her calculation speed and accuracy, and also to help train coordination of both sides of the brain.
Pei Zhong Principal Bei Meijiao said that their student Shen Yuxuan stood out among many elites to become the “strongest brain,” which was a tough challenge and also a highly prestigious competition. She expressed great affirmation of the student’s achievement.
She said that over the years, the East Malaysia abacus and mental arithmetic competition has become a signature event in the region and has been met with enthusiastic responses from participants, with the venue nearly bursting at the seams. Most participants were experienced elites professionally trained by institutes, and this competitive “arena” has a huge influence. Winning an award truly marks one as an elite among elites in the mental arithmetic field.
She stated that Shen Yuxuan's achievement is the result of day-after-day perseverance and diligent training, showcasing the school’s spirit of embracing challenges and striving for breakthroughs.
She said that the school has always emphasized mathematics and science education and actively responds to the nation’s promotion of the STEM curriculum. The school deeply understands that future society needs talents who possess keen thinking, innovative ability, and problem-solving skills. Abacus and mental arithmetic, as a foundational training, is an important way to help students build a solid foundation in mathematics and develop an exceptionally powerful brain.
Bei Meijiao encourages all students at the school to ignite their passion, whether in mathematics studies or scientific exploration, to stay focused and courageous in facing challenges, to work together to create a “smart campus,” and she also thanks parents for their support in cultivating more new generations with the strongest brains.
