UK Labour Party Launches Leadership Nominations; Burnham Runs for Leader

Published at Jul 10, 2026 10:20 am
(London, 10th) On the 9th, the UK Labour Party launched its party leader nomination process. On the same day, UK Member of Parliament and former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced on social media that he has put himself forward as a candidate for Labour leader and is currently the only candidate.

At present, Burnham is seen as the frontrunner to become the next Labour Party leader.

According to the timetable announced by the Labour Party, nominations for party leader will take place from the 9th to the 15th of this month. During this period, candidates need to secure nominations from 81 Labour MPs in the House of Commons (including themselves), and by the evening of the 16th, obtain endorsements from at least three affiliated Labour organizations, including at least two trade unions, in order to qualify for the leadership contest.

If Burnham is the only candidate and meets the nomination threshold, the Labour Party will convene a special conference on the 17th to directly announce his appointment as the new leader. Burnham will also be directly appointed as the UK Prime Minister.
