(Kuching, 14th) As part of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), Sarawak is prepared to expand its electricity supply to southern Philippines in order to strengthen regional economic and energy connectivity.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that this move is at the request of ASEAN Chairman and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar, and Sarawak will study the feasibility of expanding the power supply.
“This is one of the key pillars of our economic policy and post-pandemic development strategy.”
Speaking about economic development, Abang Johari admitted that sharing resources with neighboring countries is Sarawak’s responsibility.
“At present, our electricity supply to neighboring West Kalimantan is good, and we are also supplying power to the neighboring state of Sabah.”
He pointed out at the 24th ASEAN-China Senior Officials’ Joint Dinner on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) held at a hotel in Kuching last night that the proposal to extend transmission lines to southern Philippines is in line with Sarawak’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development.
“We hope that the economic consultations and connectivity network established as a result will strengthen the future of ASEAN and other regions.”
He further described the South China Sea as a “shared home,” stressing that all countries must jointly shoulder responsibility and work together to maintain peace and prosperity.
