Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced his departure from the People Power Party on the morning of the 17th through social media platforms.
He stated, "I am leaving the People Power Party to ensure the party's victory in the election and to uphold liberal democracy. I believe this is the best choice I can make at this moment."
He also called on the public to participate in the election and support the party's presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo.
On April 4, South Korea's Constitutional Court passed a ruling to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol, immediately removing him from office. According to the law, South Korea must hold a new presidential election within 60 days. The South Korean government has designated June 3 as the date for the new presidential election.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in order to garner support from the middle ground, there were calls within the People Power Party to sever ties with Yoon Suk-yeol. This was followed by a debate on whether he should be expelled from the party or be asked to leave on his own.
