(Serian, 5th) Sarawak’s active international collaboration in high technology fields—including the development of Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor chips—is seen as consistent with Islam’s encouragement of knowledge exploration and promotion of progress.
The Chairman of the Sarawak Islamic Council (Majlis Islam Sarawak, MIS), Datuk Misnu Taha, said that under the leadership of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, the state government is actively expanding its global cooperation network, ensuring that Sarawak’s development is not confined to traditional means.
He said: “We in Sarawak are grateful to see the Premier meeting with foreign partners almost daily to drive state development through diverse knowledge and new technologies. This includes collaboration with the University of Bristol in the UK in the field of semiconductors.”
“This is truly an exploration of knowledge, precisely what Islam advocates—we must explore knowledge to the greatest extent in order to build our beloved state.” He made these remarks at the opening night of the 65th Sarawak State-level Quran Recitation and Memorization Competition held at the Serian Convention Centre last night.
He emphasized that Islam does not set technology development in opposition to religious values, but encourages Muslims to be leaders in knowledge, innovation, and sustainable development.
He pointed out that Sarawak’s approach to promoting global cooperation helps accelerate technology transfer, cultivate human capital, and strengthen the state’s competitiveness on the international stage.
In addition, Misnu stated that MIS will continue its commitment to using the Quran as the core foundation for nurturing knowledgeable talent, in parallel with the vision of cultivating a new generation capable of mastering science, technology, and research.
He said that for more than 70 years, MIS has promoted the understanding and practice of the Quran in various ways, aiming for Muslims not only to understand religion, but also to make substantial contributions to Sarawak’s development.
In line with this agenda, he also thanked the Sarawak government for building the Darul Hana al-Quran Development Centre (DHQc-MIS) as an important strategic center to enhance education and innovation based on Quranic values.
“We at MIS will continue our efforts to ensure that the Muslim community is always well-nurtured, knowledgeable, and able to contribute to Sarawak’s development,” he said.
