Once There Was the Huashan Sword Debate, Now There's the Taishan Fist Fight! Tourists Brawl for Sunrise Viewing Spots

Published at Apr 30, 2026 11:10 am
Recently, at Taishan in Shandong, China, an incident broke out where tourists fought over spots to watch the sunrise, leading to arguments and physical altercations, with some individuals losing balance and sliding near precipitous rock edges.

According to videos circulating online and media reports, the incident took place at around 5:10 am on April 25, in the sunrise viewing area at Taishan’s South Heavenly Gate.

At the time, it was the peak period just before sunrise, with a large number of tourists gathering on the viewing platform and surrounding rock walls waiting for the sunrise. In any case, after local police intervention, both parties involved have now completed a mediation process.

According to eyewitnesses, the conflict was triggered when a tourist tried to forcibly squeeze into an already full viewing spot, which provoked dissatisfaction among other tourists. This quickly escalated into a heated argument and then into physical conflict. Video footage shows that during the chaos, some people were pushed to the rock edge, nearly losing their footing and falling, with screams and chaos erupting at the scene.

During the altercation, after a man was knocked down, he was set upon by several others, causing the situation to spiral out of control for a while, until bystanders intervened and security personnel arrived to stop it.

The Taishan scenic area authorities stated that after the incident, security personnel were dispatched immediately, and the police coordinated and intervened as well. The tourists involved only suffered minor scrapes, with no serious injuries reported.

The scenic area pointed out that the number of tourists surged on that day, with the South Heavenly Gate and other popular sunrise spots becoming severely congested in a short period of time, exposing shortcomings in crowd control and diverging mechanisms during peak periods.

The Taishan Scenic Area Branch of the Tai’an Public Security Bureau stated that they have received relevant reports and are further investigating the incident’s process and responsibilities. They will handle the matter according to the results of the investigation. Meanwhile, police reminded tourists to avoid pushing and scrambling in mountain and steep terrain areas to prevent accidents.
