A transgender individual in Thailand was accused of insulting the Quran during a livestream and was surrounded by a group of Muslims who demanded that the person shave their head and apologize.
According to Thai media reports, the transgender person, who goes by the pseudonym Lor, grew up in a Muslim community in Narathiwat province in southern Thailand and later moved to Bangkok for work.
The reports indicate that Lor and several transgender friends often presented themselves as women, which some Muslims regarded as contrary to Islamic teachings.
Reportedly, the dispute began during an online livestream debate, when an internet user named Freece criticized Lor and their friends’ appearance and behavior.
During the discussion, Freece cited religious teachings, while Lor and friends responded with remarks deemed offensive. Lor was accused of altering verses from the Quran during the livestream and inserting descriptions relating to "dogs," which strongly upset Muslim viewers online.
The livestream clips subsequently circulated among Muslim communities in Thailand, and internet users called for Lor to issue a public apology for their comments, but Lor refused.
As the online backlash intensified, the head of Amirul Mosque in Bangkok’s Bang Waek area arranged a meeting with Lor at a restaurant on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 53 in Bangkok to discuss the issue.
However, news of the meeting spread, drawing a large number of Muslims to gather outside the restaurant and demand Lor apologize publicly for the livestream remarks.
Eventually, Lor agreed to apologize, but someone then demanded Lor slap themselves and shave their head as an act of contrition. The atmosphere became increasingly tense, and Lor ultimately yielded to these demands.
Police arrived at the scene and intervened, escorting Lor from the restaurant to the police station to prevent further escalation. While police were leading Lor to a patrol car, some protesters attempted to approach and assault Lor.
Video of Lor shaving their head was widely circulated online and ignited heated debate on Thai social media. Some netizens criticized the way Lor was treated, believing that forcing someone to self-harm and shave their head was excessive and extremely humiliating.
Others claimed the incident infringed upon Lor's personal rights and reflected discrimination based on gender identity.
Meanwhile, some social media users argued that the core of the incident was about the insult to the Quran, rather than issues regarding the Muslim community’s views on gender identity or expression.
The police have yet to announce whether any legal action will be taken against those involved in the confrontation or the initial livestream.
