Sudden Floods Hit Villages in Perak, 92 Victims Temporarily Evacuated

(Perak, 15th) Sudden floods struck several villages in Perak state on Sunday, with floodwaters rising up to 2 feet; currently, a total of 92 victims from 33 families have been placed in temporary evacuation centers.

The Perak State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat revealed in a statement today (15th) that the two temporary evacuation centers were set up last night at 8:00pm and 11:30pm in Larut Matang Selama District and Manjung District respectively.

"As of now, the evacuation center at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Hampar, Trong in Larut Matang Selama District, has housed 41 people from 14 families. The victims are from Kampung Batu 25, Kampung Pagaya, Kampung Batu 23, and Sungai Rotan."

The statement also said that the other temporary evacuation center set up at Sekolah Kebangsaan Mukim Beruas in Manjung District has sheltered 51 people from 19 families. They are flood victims from Kampung Kilang, Kampung Paya Ara, Kampung Belaukapan, and Kampung Anggoli.

On another note, Assistant Director of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, Sabharoz, said in a statement that the department received rescue alerts regarding floods from Kampung Batu 25 in Trong yesterday at 5:56pm, and from Kampung Kilang, Kampung Paya Ara, and Kampung Anggoli in Pantai Remis at 10:28pm last night.

He said that for residents' safety, the firefighters rushed to the affected villages and evacuated flood victims to temporary evacuation centers. Firefighters in Trong and Pantai Remis altogether evacuated 43 people to safety.

He stated that the Trong Fire and Rescue Station mobilized 7 personnel, and jointly worked with the police, civil defense, welfare department, and the New Village Committee at the flood sites to assist in evacuating 26 villagers, who were then placed at the temporary evacuation center at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Hampar in Trong.

He added that the evacuation operations concluded smoothly at 12:35am on Monday.

In addition, Sabharoz pointed out that after receiving the flood report at 10:28pm that evening, the Pantai Remis Fire and Rescue Station also sent personnel to three affected villages to help evacuate 17 residents. They were evacuated to the temporary shelter set up at Sekolah Kebangsaan Mukim Beruas, and the rescue operation concluded at 1:53am on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm warning at 5:30am today to the regions of Kerian, Larut Matang Selama, Bagan Datuk, Manjung, and Hilir Perak.

According to the Perak State Department of Irrigation and Drainage, as well, the water levels of the Perak River in Hilir Perak and Bagan Datuk have surpassed the danger levels, with readings at 1.38 meters and 0.66 meters, respectively.
