Quek Shio Chuan, a Malaysian director from Penang, has once again been recognized by the Chinese-language film industry, being appointed as a jury member of the 21st China Changchun Film Festival "Golden Deer Awards" Evaluation Committee. He joins renowned Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, Hong Kong actor Simon Yam, and other veteran film professionals on the jury to select the winners of the festival's "Golden Deer Awards".
The 21st China Changchun Film Festival is being held from the 23rd to the 28th of this month in Changchun, Jilin Province, China. The festival's theme is "New Era · New Cradle · New Strength," and a total of 157 films were collected for competition and presentation. Out of these, 88 films met the eligibility criteria, and 16 films have ultimately been shortlisted to compete for the "Golden Deer Awards."
According to the jury line-up announced by the festival organizers, renowned director Feng Xiaogang serves as Chairman of the "Golden Deer Awards" Jury Committee. Other jury members include director and cinematographer Liang Ming, Malaysian director Quek Shio Chuan, actor Simon Yam, actress Chen Shu, screenwriter and director Shu Huan, as well as composer Wu Liqun (Lao Zai). Their areas of expertise span directing, cinematography, screenwriting, acting, and film music.
The jury made their collective debut on August 23 and began their review work. Jury Chair Feng Xiaogang stated that the China Changchun Film Festival has witnessed the development of Chinese-language cinema and that the "Golden Deer Awards" have earned industry respect over the years for their rigorous and standardized selection. The current jury will uphold the principles of fairness and impartiality, carefully evaluating each shortlisted film and using professional standards to discover outstanding works.
The final list of "Golden Deer Awards" winners will be announced at the closing ceremony and awards gala on the evening of August 28.
