According to a new agreement reached during Canadian Prime Minister Carney’s visit to China in January this year with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chinese-made electric vehicles are starting to enter the Canadian market. US officials are paying attention to the spillover effects of this situation.
Bloomberg reported on Friday (May 29), citing sources, that in recent days, hundreds of cars produced at the Shanghai factory of US electric vehicle giant Tesla have arrived in Canada under a new low-tariff regime.
These will be the first batches of Chinese-made electric vehicles to enter the Canadian market under the new mechanism. According to the agreement, Canada will import up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles within 12 months at a tariff rate of about 6%.
Previously, Canada imposed more than 100% tariff on such products, effectively shutting out Chinese electric vehicles.
According to reports, a car carrier named “Glovis Treasure” has been anchored outside Vancouver Port since Sunday (24th), carrying cargo that includes a small number of Chinese-made Lotus luxury brand cars. Shipping data compiled by Bloomberg shows that this carrier departed from Shanghai in early May.
