General Administration of Sport: Chinese Delegation Achieves Dual Success in Athletic Performance and Sportsmanship at Winter Olympics

The General Administration of Sport of China stated that the Chinese sports delegation to the Milan Winter Olympics achieved both outstanding athletic performances and excellence in sportsmanship.

According to China News Service, a summary meeting for the Chinese delegation to the Milan Winter Olympics was held in Beijing. Gao Zhidan, director of the General Administration of Sport of China, said that the Chinese delegation won five gold medals, four silver medals, and six bronze medals for a total of 15 medals, setting the country’s best-ever result at an overseas Winter Olympics, and realizing dual achievements in both athletic performance and sportsmanship.

Gao Zhidan said that Chinese ice and snow athletes vigorously carried forward the spirit of Chinese sports, the Beijing Winter Olympic spirit, and the Olympic spirit in the arenas, demonstrating their patriotism of putting the motherland first and striving for national glory, a spirit of determination and never giving up, strong teamwork, confidence, openness, friendliness and enthusiasm, as well as the fine tradition of persevering through generations. The delegation strictly implemented anti-doping requirements, achieving the goal of “zero incidents”, and expanded sports exchange and increased the influence of Chinese culture abroad through activities such as setting up the “China House” and holding cultural exhibitions, accomplishing their tasks in competition, diplomacy, culture, and other fields.

He also pointed out that the overall lag of China’s ice and snow sports in the world has not changed, nor has the “chaser” status. At present, problems remain in areas such as training concepts and methodology, a limited range of advantage sports, insufficient talent reserves, and management and command of major competitions needing improvement. In the future, it is necessary to deepen the reform of management systems and mechanisms, training, and competitions, establish diversified talent training models, broaden the range of medal-contending events, set up an elimination mechanism, and formulate more targeted preparation measures.

Freestyle skier Gu Ailing, who claimed one gold and two silvers at these Games, said that every time she competes, she is not only representing herself but also all young women in China. She hopes to show people the power of sports. Looking to the future, Gu Ailing believes that what matters most is to enjoy the process: "No matter what the result is, as long as you have made your best preparation, you will never have regrets."
