(Miri, 23rd) Miri City Council wishes to reiterate and emphasize that the department is committed to preventing, reducing, controlling pollution, and improving the environment in collaboration with relevant departments and agencies to ensure community safety and well-being, as well as managing public health issues faced by the community.
The council's statement pointed out that it regrets the false and incorrect statements made by certain parties regarding the Miri City Council's waste collection services and its decision to withdraw the placement of roll-on/roll-off garbage bins in commercial areas and at certain designated locations (like roadsides). However, let's advocate for cooperation because keeping the city clean and improving the environment is our shared responsibility. We should all always foster the spirit of cooperation among residents and encourage them to actively participate in efforts to manage and effectively reduce illegal dumping.
The council's commitment to waste management services remains unchanged, and our waste collection schedule involves the use of compactor trucks to collect waste in Miri City daily, with household waste collection frequency in residential areas being three times a week and daily collection of garbage in commercial areas and educational institutions or schools.
Therefore, it is incorrect to state that the Miri City Council is abolishing its core municipal duty, which is the crucial task of "waste management services." In fact, 46% of Miri City Council's total annual revenue is allocated to waste management, desludging work of septic tanks, which includes occasional other street cleaning activities.
The reason for closing or withdrawing roll-on/roll-off garbage bin facilities in commercial areas and certain designated locations, including roadsides, is that these facilities have been misused by the public. Roll-on/roll-off garbage bin facilities are intended for the proper disposal of large household items, such as damaged or discarded furniture, household electrical and electronic waste, but they have been illegally used to dump or dispose of construction waste and debris, garden trash/waste, etc.
Due to the waste disposal area facilities being turned into collection centers by scavengers, with waste from roll-on/roll-off garbage bins scattered on the ground, making the site unsanitary, Miri City Council has received numerous complaints of odor nuisance from surrounding residents and requests for the closure of the garbage bin center.
Although the designated roll-on/roll-off garbage bin centers have been closed, the Council provides other initiatives and additional services, such as open truck transport services for household items (bulk waste disposal) at very low cost upon request; providing roll-on garbage bins or open trucks for community "gotong-royong" cleaning campaigns; and spring cleaning programs during festive seasons (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Gawai Dayak, and Christmas), with roll-on garbage bins placed at various designated locations.
The Miri City Council is seeking and appealing to the public for active participation to ensure the proper disposal of waste and to avoid illegal disposal of waste harmful to the environment. The council urges the public to cooperate, remain vigilant, and work with the Miri City Council to curb and stop illegal dumping activities in your community.
Residents can report littering behaviors to the Miri City Council via the hotline numbers 085-424111; 085-433501, or 085-442411, or the Miri Smart City Command Center (MSCCC) at 085-424600 or 019-214 4600 (WhatsApp only).
Apart from the above methods, the public can also report through the Miri Cares Apps or Talikhidmat Apps.
