Southern Mexico experienced a 6.5-magnitude earthquake at around 8 a.m. local time on the 2nd (10 p.m. Malaysia time on the 2nd). At present, at least 2 people have been reported dead and more than 10 injured.

The epicenter was located near Acapulco, 14 kilometers southwest of the town of San Marcos, Guerrero state. Acapulco is an important port and seaside resort. The capital, Mexico City, also felt intense shaking, with tremors reported in various places. There have been continuous aftershocks, totaling over 500.

During the earthquake, residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco flocked to the streets. Authorities indicated that several landslides occurred along some highways in the Acapulco surrounding area and Guerrero state.

When the earthquake struck, President Sheinbaum was forced to interrupt the first routine press conference of the new year, stepped off the podium to calm everyone, and also took shelter aside. The event resumed after a few minutes.

In some locations, many tile-like objects allegedly fell from the buildings. Local residents rushed outdoors to take shelter, keeping a safe distance from the swaying structures.

Mexico sits on the eastern edge of the Pacific Ring of Fire at the junction of the Pacific, North American, Caribbean, and other tectonic plates. This region is one of the world’s earthquake-prone zones.
