Korean star Kim Soo-hyun’s legal representative has publicly released handwritten letters he wrote to his actual girlfriend during military service, following accusations by Kim Sae-ron’s family that the two had been dating since the end of 2015. This serves as crucial evidence to dispel the rumors of an “underage relationship.”
Kim Soo-hyun's attorney, Ko Sang-rok, stated that Kim Soo-hyun enlisted in October 2017 and served in a search unit at the front-line Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). From January 2018 until his discharge in the spring of 2019, he expressed his longing for his girlfriend in writing nearly every day, accumulating around 150 letters. Due to concerns about loss or leaks during mailing, he chose to personally deliver the letters to his girlfriend during his leave, and would receive handwritten replies from her on the spot.
The content of the letters includes deep expressions of love. For example, on April 6, 2018, Kim Soo-hyun wrote: “I love you, it’s me,” and “From now on, I want to say loudly—it’s you who helped me get through this military life.” His diary also mentions travel plans with his girlfriend, hopes for a long future together, and even a desire to argue and make up together, all revealing an atmosphere of being deeply in love.
Attorney Ko emphasized that these writings are “private records that truly reflect the circumstances at the time and cannot be fabricated,” and thus are highly credible. As for the letter to Kim Sae-ron that has stirred controversy, he pointed out that it is entirely different in nature; it is not a love letter, but rather a casual note about his experiences in the army and plans after discharge.
Attorney Ko further stated that, at the time, Kim Soo-hyun would occasionally send letters to friends or colleagues in the entertainment industry to maintain contact. Phrases like “I miss you” in these letters are just common expressions of a soldier’s longing for time off, not romantic confessions. He also revealed a postcard dated November 1, 2019, which read, “Even if we argue, I’ll apologize first and compromise,” showing that he was in the early stages of a romantic relationship at the time. Multiple group photos from December 2019 and early 2020 also confirm that Kim Soo-hyun’s relationship began when Kim Sae-ron was an adult and in college. Attorney Ko stressed that if, as the family claims, the romance had started in her third year of middle school, there should be many more early photos or records, but so far no such evidence has been found.
