(Kuching, 29th) The Sarawak government is formulating a law to mandate the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in public places.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Prof. Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian stated that locations like badminton courts, tennis courts, football fields, and shopping centers should be equipped with AEDs.

“We must not only ensure the coverage of AEDs, but also educate the public on the location and use of these devices. Otherwise, having numerous AEDs installed will be in vain. Hence, education and training will be our next important task.”

He said this while speaking at the award ceremony of a children's coloring competition organized by the Malaysian Red Crescent Stampin Branch and the Kuching Penrissen JKKK yesterday.

Additionally, Dr. Sim Kui Hian also emphasized the importance of performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and using AEDs while waiting for professional rescue teams to arrive.

He mentioned that Stutong Riverside Park is already equipped with AEDs, but many people are unaware of their presence or lack the knowledge to use them, resulting in the equipment being unable to fully perform its function.

He stated that the government plans to promote first aid knowledge through community programs, ensuring that every Sarawakian can master the basic skills of operating an AED, and believed that through supporting the widespread use of AEDs and first aid education, Sarawak can build a safer and more secure community.

This initiative will allow patients suffering from sudden cardiac arrest to receive immediate assistance, thereby saving more lives.
