MIRI (Apr 7): Five swimmers from Miri’s Top Speed Aquatic Swimming Club have been selected to represent Sarawak at the 68th Milo/Malaysia Open Swimming Championships 2026, scheduled to take place from April 9 to 12 at Bukit Jalil.
The swimmers are Henry Voon, Bong Rui Jie, Claire Lau, Celine Tiong and Liysha Liung Chen Celetine Baru.
Among them, Claire Lau, Liysha Liung Chen and Bong Rui Jie recently underwent a two-week intensive training programme in Shenyang, China, as part of their preparations for upcoming competitions.
Club advisor and coach David Chung said the training in China was extremely intensive and physically demanding, and only three swimmers successfully completed the programme.
He noted that the young swimmers are part of Sarawak’s early preparations for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with exposure to high-level overseas training aimed at raising their competitive standards.
Meanwhile, Henry Voon, who is currently studying in Kuala Lumpur, is expected to join the team on Wednesday ahead of the competition.
The coaching team expressed confidence that the swimmers will rise to the challenge and deliver strong performances at the national meet.
