Polish President: The Issue of WWII Reparations from Germany Must Ultimately Be Resolved

On the 1st, Polish President Nawrocki stated during a ceremony in Gdańsk, northern Poland, commemorating the 86th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, that the issue of WWII reparations from Germany must ultimately be resolved.

In his speech, he said that as an important "frontline country" on NATO's eastern flank, Poland not only needs to establish just, factual, and clear bilateral relations with Germany, but also needs reparations from Germany.

He also emphasized that even if Germany makes reparations, Poland will "not suffer from historical amnesia."

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski wrote on social media that afternoon that although Poland is morally entitled to reparations from Germany for crimes committed during WWII, "legally, unfortunately, this matter is hopeless," "but we will support the president's initiative."

In September 2022, the Law and Justice Party-led government of Poland released a report asserting that Germany should pay Poland 6.2 trillion zloty (about 7.19 trillion Malaysian ringgit) in war reparations for the loss of life and property damage caused by the German invasion during WWII.

Current Polish Prime Minister Tusk, leader of the Civic Platform party, announced in May this year that Poland would no longer demand reparations from Germany and hoped to focus on ensuring the security of both countries. Germany, for its part, maintains that the reparations issue has already been settled because Poland renounced further claims in 1953, and has no intention to negotiate on the matter.

In the early morning of September 1, 1939, as the Nazi German warship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Polish troops stationed on the Westerplatte peninsula, Germany launched a blitzkrieg against Poland, marking the full outbreak of World War II. During WWII, about 6 million Poles died at the hands of the Nazis.
