The Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Nik Nazmi, announced that under the newly signed International Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Agreement between our country and China, Malaysia will receive a new pair of giant pandas in the next 10 years.
Yesterday (16th), he represented Malaysia and exchanged the memorandum of the new international giant panda conservation cooperation plan agreement with Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yu Jing, at the Prime Minister's residence in Putrajaya.
Nik Nazmi stated in a press release today that the international panda conservation cooperation plan is a symbol of friendship between Malaysia and China and aligns with the spirit of Malaysia’s emphasis on international cooperation.
“Both parties agree to continue conducting cooperative research on giant panda conservation and look forward to achieving more progress in the field of cooperative research on giant pandas.”
He mentioned that based on a previous agreement signed on June 15, 2012, Malaysia received a pair of giant pandas for a period of 10 years, currently housed at the Giant Panda Conservation Center at the National Zoo.
“During this period, Malaysia has achieved excellent performance in panda conservation work, with three panda cubs born in succession, and these panda cubs have been returned to China according to the agreement terms.”
He mentioned that with the signing of the new international giant panda conservation cooperation plan agreement, Malaysia will receive a new pair of giant pandas in the next 10 years.
“I hope that giant pandas, as envoys of China, can further promote mutual understanding and close cooperation between the two countries.”
He stated that Malaysia will continue to be committed to cooperating with China to jointly promote the conservation and scientific research cooperation of this iconic wildlife species, the giant panda.
