Hong Kong SAR Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong said that the number of supported sci-tech enterprises intending to develop in Hong Kong has increased from over 200 last year to more than 500 this year.
On Saturday (September 21), Sun Dong said on a Radio Television Hong Kong program that the number of enterprises supported by the SAR government has grown from over 200 last year to nearly 500 this year, including both local enterprises and those introduced from abroad. Sun Dong pointed out that the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong has almost started "from scratch". The development of new industrialization requires a "tailored approach based on local conditions and timing", and should align with the country’s overall development trend. While assisting mainland enterprises to go global, it can also bring products made in Hong Kong to overseas markets.
Sun Dong noted that the "Policy Address" released on Wednesday (September 17) lists industry-oriented development as one of its priorities. He believes Hong Kong has limited space and high labor costs, making advanced manufacturing more expensive. It is therefore necessary to find industries truly suited to Hong Kong’s development. These include "pilot-scale industries", that is, handling the most critical technologies before large-scale production, which not only fits Hong Kong’s characteristics but can also generate certain revenue.
Sun Dong also revealed that over 24,000 civil servants are now using Hong Kong’s independently developed large language model "HKGPT". In addition, some civil servants are piloting the use of "HK VoiceGPT" for searches or generating solutions. He plans to launch "HK VoiceGPT" to the public through the iAM Smart platform within this year.
